Workplace Ergonomics — How to Maintain Optimal Health and Energy
Whether your desk job is in an office or remote, sitting all day can actually kill energy levels if you don’t take steps to stay energized. Our team of health experts at Aligned Integrated Health in Scottsdale offer some handy tips for improving your workplace ergonomics and boosting your overall well-being.
Change Your Desk Set-Up
Most desk setups are not optimized for proper ergonomics. With a few easy changes, you can transform your workspace.
- Be sure that your computer or laptop is positioned high enough so that you can look at the screen straight ahead and not have to crane your neck or head down
- Ensure that your arms are parallel to the ground and your elbows are at ninety degree angles while typing on your keyboard
- Keep your wrists in a neutral position as you type to avoid strain
Maintain Good Posture
Poor posture can lead to neck pain, back pain, muscle stiffness, and restrict blood flow. You can preserve good posture by sitting up straight and trying not to round your lower back. You can accomplish this by keeping your feet flat on the floor and adjusting your chair so that your hips are slightly above your knees. When your knees are raised above your hips, it places extra strain on your lower back and leads to pain.
Take Breaks
Try to take regular breaks from your work to give your body a break. If you can, get up and walk around for a few minutes, or practice some stretching exercises at your desk to get rid of stiffness and tension while boosting blood flow. It’s also a good idea to stop typing every now and then, as prolonged periods of keyboard use have been linked to carpal tunnel syndrome.
